The Black Mafia Family (BMF), was a drug trafficking organization originally based out ofDetroit, Michigan. Started by the Flenory brothers, Demetrius and Terry, by the year 2000 they had established multi-kilogram cocaine distribution cells in cities throughout the United States. Through their Los Angeles-based drug source, they had direct links to Mexican-based drug cartels.[1] They established two main hubs for their operation; the Atlanta, Georgia hub was operated by older brother Demetrius, while the Los Angeles, Californiahub was operated by Terry.
Around 2000, they began to try to legitimize and enter the Hip-Hop music scene, starting a company called BMF Entertainment. Through BMF Entertainment they helped promote a number of artists, including Young Jeezy, as well as BMF Entertainment's sole artists, Bleu DaVinci. Before their entrance into the music business, they were known to associate with a number of high-profile hip-hop artists, including Jay-ZFabolous, and Bun B.
In 2005 the Drug Enforcement Administration indicted members of the Black Mafia Family; ultimately securing convictions of running a Continuing Criminal Enterprise against the Flenory brothers. Both would be sentenced to 30 years to life.[2] Subsequent indictments would eventually target over 150 members of the organization. Prosecutors would allege the organization made over $270 million over the course of the conspiracy.

Solomon Burke passes but his voice lives on forever

One of my all time favorite voices in Soul Music. The Late Great Solomon Burke has passed. One of his most popular songs "Cry To Me" was featured in Dirty Dancing and was a lot of folks first time to hear the singer's chops. He also covered one of my dad and Dan Penn's song "Take Me Just as I Am". If you aren't familiar with his work I highly recommend the albums "King Solomon", "Don't Give Up on Me" and the album "Nashville".  RIP Solomon you will be missed.

Solomon Burke - Don't Give Up On Me by corqsan2

Early this morning, Sunday, October 10, 2010, the legendary King of Rock & Soul, Solomon Burke, our father, passed away due to natural causes.
Solomon had just arrived at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands for a sold out show at Paradiso with Dutch band, De Dijk.  He was on his way to spread his message of love as he loved to do.
This is a time of great sorrow for our entire family.  We truly appreciate all of the support and well wishes from his friends and fans.  Although our hearts and lives will never be the same, his love, life and music will continue to live within us forever.

Soul singer Solomon Burke has died at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, a Dutch police spokesman has said.

Burke, who wrote the hit Everybody Needs Somebody to Love among many others, was both a Grammy winner and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The singer reportedly died on a plane after arriving on a flight from Los Angeles.
He had been due to perform at a club in Amsterdam on Tuesday.
Burke was born in Philadelphia in an upstairs room at a gospel church.
"Many artists claim to have their roots in the church, but few go back this far and run this deep," he said on his website.
He started recording when he was 14 with his first song Christmas Presents From Heaven.

The man who Tom Waits called "one of the architects of American Music" also counted Mick Jagger among his many fans.
Legendary Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler once called Burke the best soul singer of all time.
He was busy to the end, having run up more than 130,000 frequent flier miles this year alone, with concerts throughout the UK and Europe.
According to a 2002 interview with Philadelphia Weekly, Burke fathered 21 children and had 90 grandchildren and 19 great grand children. He lived in Los Angeles.

Secret Sisters representing Muscle Shoals

These girls are from my hood in Bama. They live down the street from my sista Shonna Tucker in the Drive-By Truckers and she has great things to say about them. Spread the word these girls are super talented.

Meet The Secret Sisters, Jack White And T Bone Burnett’s Favorite New Band
By Katie Chow on September 23rd, 2010

The Secret Sisters have had a busy year following their discovery at an audition in October 2009 and subsequent signing to Universal. Hailing from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, real-life siblings Laura and Lydia Rogers quickly attracted the attention of Jack White, who released their debut 45 (a cover of Johnny Cash’s “Big River”) on his own Third Man Records last month.

With their retro ethos, it’s easy to understand why. More than just Bettie Page bangs and red lipstick, the sisters’ dedication to doing things the old-fashioned way led them to ban computers and everything digital from the recording of their debut at Nashville’s Blackbird Studios.

Executive-produced by T Bone Burnett, the 10 tracks feature a combination of classic covers and original songs. Flavored with touches from the ’40s and ’50s, the Secret Sisters’ country-folk sound shows their Southern roots. The self-titled album will be released on October 12 on Burnett’s new imprint Beladroit. The Secret Sisters will hit the road with Burnett as a part of The Speaking Clock Revue, featuring Elton John & Leon Russell, John Mellencamp, Elvis Costello, Gregg Allman, Ralph Stanley, Jeff Bridges, Punch Brothers, and Karen Elson.

Davves

After the success of the popular chillwave sound projects Chill Murray (created by actor Bill Murray) and Chill Pullman (created by Bill Pullman), it seems like popular comedian  has started a ‘’ sound project. It is rumored to be called DAVVES.
His upcoming EP will cover themes like ‘weed’, ‘black people’, and ‘the rebranding of Comedy Central.’ Really just want to listen to some chill Beach vibes, and think about when he was ‘the funniest man alive.’ Really hope he is finally King of the ________.

RIP BEN KEITH - YOU WILL FOREVER BE MISSED!

Ben Keith is one of my all time favorite musicians and family friend. He was always so sweet to me as the kid on tour, hanging around and he always made me feel welcome. Always a sweet soul. He was a true musician that played from his soul. He couldn't help but play what he felt...This is so rare these days. I will never forget his amazing stories about Patsy Cline and Faron Young and the early days...

Today is a very sad day for anyone that loves good music to loose such a legend. His music will live on forever and he will forever be missed. RIP Ben, I am wearing my Neil Young Harvesters Tour T-shirt with you on it in memory and listening to your records all day. Thanks for the music and your kindness. We love you.

This bio doesn't cover half of what all he has accomplished, but it is the best I could find.
Biography by Andrew Leahey

An accomplished producer, solo artist, and pedal steel guitarist, Kentucky native Ben Keith got his start as a Nashville session musician during the late '50s. Two decades later, he secured a spot with Neil Young's band, where he contributed to such landmark albums asHarvest, Tonight's the Night, Comes a Time, and Harvest Moon.

Having established his pedal steel credentials, Keith soon branched out into other areas of the music business. He produced Jewel's Pieces of You, which became one of the best-selling debut albums in history, and also launched a solo career while working concurrently with such luminaries as Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Willie Nelson. He made his solo debut in 1984, playing alongside J.J. Cale and Paul Butterfield on To a Wild Rose, and released the holiday-themed Seven Gates: A Christmas Album ten years later. The latter record was later reissued in 2008 under the name Christmas at the Ranch.

Fol Chen @ Echoplex (Album Release Show)

Tuesday night I had the pleasure of making the scenic drive from Venice to Silverlake. Minus the $30 gas purchase and getting stuck for 20 min. behind a fixed-speed bike gang (and a damn fashionable one might I add), the night was great. Fol Chen brought the Echo to its feet with a very precise and tight set... and yes, the venue is standing room only, but still, the show rocked and an overall good time was had by all.

Mike Posner, "Cooler Than Me"

This song is a current guilty pleasure of mine that I can't seem to shake. Simple pop record or ironic shot at hipster girls across the globe? Have a listen and decide for yourself. Just be warned, this song is infectious and will have you singing along in no time-- no matter how cool you are!

Los Campesinos! at El Rey (5/8/2010)

Los Campesinos! A seven piece band hailing from Cardiff, Wales. Although they are one of the most talked about bands in the indie scene right now, up until last Saturday's show at the El Rey I knew nothing about this band other than that they are part of the Mixtape Music licensing roster, and hence my reason for checking them out. They took the stage around 10:15 and at first glance I assumed I was getting ready to hear a Welsh version of Arcade Fire. What transpired over the next hour and a half, to put it simply, was one of the most kick-ass rock shows I have been to in a long time. El Rey, definitely known for attracting a very hip, arm-crossing, too-cool-to-dance type crowd was in for a huge surprise. I have been to many shows at El Rey and I have never seen the energy level in the venue as high as it was that night. As Los Campesinos! tore threw their set with precision and raw energy, El Rey erupted in to a melee of stage-diving, moshing, and believe it or not-- DANCING!! It's not that my expectations were low, but more so I just did not really know what to expect. What I got was treatment to one of the best shows I have seen in LA in ages. And as much as I hate planned encores, I even found myself shouting along with the rest of the rabid fans for the group to come back out and grace us with one last song. To put it simply, great fucking band and unbelievable show!!!

If you are interested in learning more about the band please feel free to visit their myspace page:

Expect plenty of more great things to come from this band!!

Dri, "Two Are One"

"Who's in your heart is not always who's in your bed"- Adrianne Verhooeven

Make sure you buy/steal/download Dri's full album, "Smoke Rings". In my opinion, one of the most overlooked and underrated albums of 2007. Also, be on the lookout for new material from this ex-Anniversary member as she sets to release a project with her new band, Extra Classic.

Kim Janssen in Vandel Park

One of my all-time fondest memories-- spending 8 hours in Vandel Park tripping on magic mushrooms with my ex-girlfriend. Apparently other magic occurs in Vandel as well, because this video of Kim Janssen performing "Homesick and Hotelrooms" for Amsterdam Acoustic sessions is for lack of better words, really good. Please take a listen and let us know your thoughts.

The Slow Club, "Yeah So"

Call me sentimental, call me what you will-- I can't get enough of The Slow Club's, "Yeah So" (especially "When I Go" and "It Doesn't Have to Be Beautiful"). Yes they are a Mixtape artist and if this a shameless plug then sure, why the hell not? Besides, there is no shame in a grown man crying.

Coachella 2010!

I realize this post may be a little late, however, let the gap between Coachella and date of post be an indicator as to the amount of fun (i.e. "recovery time") that was had (i.e. "needed") at this year's festival. I'll get right down to it... Major Lazer in the Mojave tent on Saturday night gets my vote for performance of the festival. I know it is cliche to comment on the "energy", but fuck it, the energy in that tent Saturday night was out of control!!! Other highlights included The Dead Weather, LCD Soundsystem and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros; while Mixtape artists Girls, Beach House and Miike Snow all lived up to their hype!
